um... Staple!

.::saturday, mar 5... again... ::. Okay, HERE'S where Staple! was held: the Elks Lodge. A cute little building up on a hill, which I almost passed twice. The Lodge is nestled amongst adorable little houses in a residential area (I was REALLY starting to think that my directions were off!).
From the balcony of the Lodge... great view of Austin!

I'd grabbed breakfast with my Aunt Candy and Uncle Dave VERY early that morning, but still found myself getting to the show a little bit late (how unusual!). And even then I had to go all the way back to my hotel room because I forgot - get this - my STAPLER. I'm such a dweeb...

So when I got back, they were starting the first panel, which was (conveniently) a webcomics panel. Seeing as I only had two purposes to the trip - to pass out ashcans of GWS and to enjoy the convention - I decided to listen in on the panel. Which looked like this:
Alright, let's play Little League Team Portrait for a moment.

The first two guys on the left are Chris and Aaron of SquirrelWorks.com (forgive me if I've got the names mixed up - that's a pretty crappy photo!).

Next we have Barb Lien-Cooper of Gun Street Girl (the banner for which used to be here, and will make a come-back... someday... !).

Next we have A MYSTERY GUEST!! OOOOOOOO!!

Next to the empty chair, of course, that's Mr. Webcomic himself, Scott Kurtz of the deservedly popular PVP.

And on the end there is Lea Hernandez of Rumble Girls and Girlamatic.

An honorable cast indeed.

Now long story short, I got "found out" by Scott before he even introduced himself, and called me up to the table. So I became Mystery Guest of the Day (it's like that chair was empty just for me!). I'm still floored that he recognized me, as I've only met him once (although I've harrassed him numerous times via e-mail). I felt like a little Webcomic goddess, although I'd like to mention that I'm MISERABLE at talking in front of large groups of people, and on top of that I tend to say things I don't mean when I'm nervous.

Oh, and on top of THAT, I'd just finished a Coke before I got up there, so I had to pee the whole freakin' time.

Thus, I made a pretty bad production of myself talking about 360ep. To anyone who heard it (or hears it, as it'll be out on video - gah!), please note that I DO know what 360 is going to be doing with Girls With Slingshots, and I'm NOT just in it for the paycheck! I'm in it because they're business people who will be able to merchandise and promote the strip far better than I could ever hope to, and they give me goals to reach.

Although... the paycheck is certainly a nice touch :)

Anyway, the way I talked about the deal sounded WAY more greedy and heartless, so I thought I'd make that point clear.
To further emphasize what a nice freaking guy Scott is, he let me sit at his table for the rest of the show! I didn't get a [very quickly sold-out!] table in time, so that was a seriously nice gesture. I passed out GWS ashcans and business cards and did a few sketches, and enjoyed watching Kurtz sketch for fans while unbelievably cute comic-reading girls and guys walked by. Like this one:
Aaaaaaaand these ones:
At one point my eyes locked onto someone who could have EASILY been my stunt double, and rudely informed her that she looked just like me; in fact, "You look GREAT!"

I mean... really, how the hell do I NOT get the CRAP beaten out of me some days??
Sitting next to us were Todd Therot and Moises Delgado. I probably botched both names, and I can't find the comic they do. But they sure were nice guys!
Scott Hinze of Fanboy Radio interviewing Kurtz after MCing the Webcomics panel...
... and interviewing Michael Lark, who was there to help out the CBLDF alongside Terry Moore of Strangers In Paradise.

As I mentioned earlier on the site, either the Tex-Mex or some other strange force was busy terrorizing my stomach that night (through the next day!). To be honest, I haven't felt right since that weekend (please don't be the flu, please don't be the flu!).

So I rested up that evening and slept in late Sunday to find that the BBQ for Staple!-goers had been cancelled... which, naturally, led me to take a hike.
